Screenshot Guide

Why Screenshots Matter

Properly captured screenshots serve as crucial evidence when reporting online harassment, hate speech, or misinformation. They help platform administrators understand the context and severity of the issue, and can be used for documentation and advocacy purposes.

Follow these guidelines to ensure your screenshots are effective and useful for reporting and documentation.

Essential Elements to Include

  • Full Context

Capture the entire post or comment, including any relevant replies or preceding content that provides context.

  • Username/Profile

Include the username or profile name of the person posting the content (do not censor this information).

  • Date and Time

Make sure the timestamp of the post is visible to establish when the incident occurred.

  • Platform Indicators

Include elements that show which platform the content appears on (Facebook, Twitter, etc.).

  • URL or Post Link

When possible, capture or separately record the URL of the content for verification purposes.

How to Screenshot on Desktop

  • Windows

Press Print Screen or Windows + Shift + S for the snipping tool.

  • Mac

Press Command + Shift + 3 for full screen or Command + Shift + 4 for a selection.

  • Chrome Extension

Use "Full Page Screen Capture" or similar extensions for capturing entire webpages.

How to Screenshot on Mobile

  • Android

Press Power + Volume Down buttons simultaneously (may vary by device).

  • iPhone

For Face ID models: Side button + Volume Up. For Home button models: Home + Side button.

  • Scrolling Screenshot

Many newer phones offer scrolling screenshot options after taking an initial screenshot.

Screenshot Best Practices

DO

  • Take multiple screenshots if needed to capture full context
  • Save screenshots with meaningful filenames (date_platform_incident)
  • Capture the URL separately if it doesn't appear in the screenshot
  • Document when and where you saw the content

DON'T

  • Edit or alter the screenshot in any way
  • Crop out important contextual information
  • Share screenshots publicly before reporting (may lead to content removal)
  • Delay taking screenshots (content may be deleted)

  4. Submit Report: Use the appropriate reporting mechanism for the platform (see platform-specific guides below).
  5. Track Response: Document the platform's response and any actions taken.

Fact-Checking Tools

The Importance of Fact-Checking

Misinformation targeted at the Zomi community can spread rapidly online, causing real harm and fueling discrimination. By developing strong fact-checking skills, you can help combat false narratives and protect our community.

These tools and techniques will help you verify information before sharing it and identify potential misinformation that should be reported and corrected.

Basic Fact-Checking Strategies

Check the Source

  • Who published this information?
  • Is this a credible news source or recognized organization?
  • Does the source have expertise in this topic?
  • Check the "About" page or author bio for credibility

Cross-Check Information

  • Is this information reported by multiple reliable sources?
  • Do different sources agree on the basic facts?
  • Search for the topic with terms like "fact check" or "debunk"
  • Check if established fact-checking organizations have addressed it

Check Dates and Context

  • When was this information published?
  • Is it being presented as current when it's actually old?
  • Has the situation changed significantly since publication?
  • Has content been taken out of its original context?

Verify Images and Videos

  • Perform a reverse image search (Google Images, TinEye)
  • Check if the image appears elsewhere with different context
  • Look for signs of manipulation or editing
  • Check metadata if available (location, date, camera info)
